A El Charquito vas a comer.
El Charquito is really something. It’s been years since I’ve spent my summers in Benicassim, and on recommendation from good friends Amalia and Alberto we discovered this place…which is THE place around here. With a clear flamenco and bullfighting style to the décor, everything invites you to sit down and eat at El Charquito: the music, always carefully chosen and featuring rumba, pop and flamenquito hits from many eras; and especially the food. It’s the real deal. They serve ingredient-driven food cooked simply, with no bells and whistles. But it’s hard to resist being drawn there time and time again by the quality and variety.
Tavern with music and good service
Good fish, select seafood breaded and done just right, outstanding marinated anchovies, exquisite beef and the province’s best Spanish omelette (made by the now-legendary Justi) are all good options. Carlos has undoubtedly created the best restaurant in Benicassim. I, for one, have no doubt about it. It is a must at any time of the year, summer or winter. Its extensive and wonderful wine list is masterfully curated by Carlos, who knows his vineyards, wineries and vintage years, and who is a great lover of the world of wines and gastronomy in general. At El Charquito you will eat, and very well at that. Let yourself go with the flow, as the ambience carries you late into the night, when the music gets louder and the bar clears out to make room for cocktails and impromptu dances that, here, become classics.
The challenge, especially in summer, is getting a table. You have to book several days in advance. And that’s with two dinner seatings! But I absolutely recommend doing so. You will enjoy the impeccable simple food and the most efficient and friendly service around. Bravo to Carlos for his great work and consistency! It’s professionalism and pleasure in a place you’ll want to return to again and again!
