The traditional concept with innovation. This is the basis and the secret of many gastronomic offerings in Barcelona, although not all of them manage to pull it off successfully. Today we are going to talk about a place that has in fact achieved it, and then some. We are talking about CHICO, the big brother of QUILLO BAR (which we’ve already talked about on this blog), and which signified the break-out at the end of 2015 of Gonzalo Ros and Cristina Marcilla (the ex-directors of the Grupo Tragaluz) on Mandri Street, in an area of the city known for its ambience and tapa hopping. The menu is centered around constantly changing small dishes and market-fresh produce, served at an appealing bar and on small tables that fill to the brim with diners thanks to the reputation of this area. A good vibe, a correct but limited wine list, quality tapas and fantastic ambience in a very normal, airy space that, by the way, is open every day of the year for lunch and dinner.
Right on Calle Mandri, a youth hot spot in Barcelona
The steak tartare is right on the money, the truffled ensaladilla with picos (small bread sticks) is delicious, and the croquetas keep getting better and better. Other options include the opportunity to eat some good oysters with the obligatory glass of champagne, an excellent rice, generous patatas bravas, or the catch-of-the-day, among other things. A place that we visit from time to time and that never lets us down. It is particularly good for going out for tapas with friends and letting yourself be seen… let’s not forget that this is the “high” area of Barcelona, where seeing or being seen is an art form…
The owners promise to add more establishments to their repertoire after getting Quillo Bar going. Somewhere to keep coming back for more, and where you will always be satisfied. A place well on its way to becoming a classic on this famous Barcelona street.
