The idea behind the name (“four things”) alludes to the fact that the things that are most appealing are always the hardest to find. A place where you can snack on four things, where you can go out for a bite, where you can drink good wine and choose from a few well-made, and well-presented dishes.
An extensive dessert menu.
It is with this idea in mind that we head to the new establishment from the maestro@oriolbalaguerchocolates, the excellent pastry chef and his wife Marta Rams. But we didn’t choose the right day… We decided to sit at the bar of @quatre_coses_oriolbalaguer, in order to enjoy the small dishes and tapas on offer to the fullest. Oriol and Marta weren’t there and the service didn’t help matters. We asked for details about some of the dishes and were passed around from one waiter to another until they finally had to go get the answers from the kitchen. It hasn’t been open very long, and so this confusion with regard to the explanations of the dishes might be understandable, but unfortunately the confusion continued…
The food is correct. We decided on the ensaladilla con sepia (cuttlefish) (one of the best things) and we also tried the croquetas and the buñuelos. Good, but that’s it. The same breading was used for both. The tortilla was surprising, both for its juiciness and the foam aliolion top. They never offered us bread. They never recommended the eggplant – about which I have since heard so much on food blogs and websites) and we were left with the desire to see a little more edginess at the bar, more rock n’ roll, more tapeo, and more of the fun that was missing on this first visit. We got our hopes up with the dessert of tatín de manzana (apple tart), but it didn’t do much for us either. Puff pastry, caramelized apple, and little else.
We left, truthfully a little sad at not having enjoyed the experience. The offer is worth trying, it is even necessary, but it was lacking in “punch.” The best part was the display of breads and pastries from Oriol, which we were unable to resist, and which reaffirmed his culinary prowess.
We will definitely go back. First visits are not always the best…
