Hípica de Prats, Prats i Samsó, Lleida

It was the best trinxatI’ve eaten in recent years, without a doubt. That dish made from cabbage and potatoes, served with fantastic rashers and black sausage, is one of the four starters to choose from. There is no menu; instead the owners tell you what’s cooking as they take your order: soup, trinxat, salad and chickpeas for the first course; and grilled meats for the main. Traditional desserts like crème brûlée, the “valenciano” (vanilla ice cream with orange juice) and ice creams round out the brief menu that still manages to have surprises in store.

Small menu but everything done well. Famous for their trinxat

The restaurant fills up for two seatings every day, so booking is essential. There is no menu, no writing down of anything. Miraculously the owners remember each and every dish that is ordered at every table, as well as the drinks, with no margin for error. It’s like nothing else.

The food is very good. The atmosphere (equestrian or “Els cavalls” as it is also known) sets a good stage for the feast ahead. The portions are generous, ample, and above all, mouth-watering. The grilled meats are served with wonderful chips that deserve mention: circular, crunchy and deliciously juicy. It’s a lively family vibe in an essential spot for those who love mountains and skiing, a must-visit.

You can eat well and leave full for €25 per person, at most. And that’s with a drink included. What a great discovery that we were happy to enjoy with friends over Christmas.
